Death and Entitlement on the Roadways

Mon Jul 13, 2009, 12:40 PM
I have a problem with cyclists on the roadways in my city. Or any city for that matter. I've enjoyed it myself, for years. Cycling that is. Thousands of hours I'm sure. On the road and off. But it's the city streets that have me perplexed. As a driver, I'm supposed to give the cyclists a safe barrier. But I can't do this safely for any parties that may be involved. Nor they for me. There isn't enough room in my lane.

And why should I be forced to endanger my life and potential livelihood for such a few? And all at such a slow pace?

We have a major side street called Burnside. It's one of the downtown artiries. And it shows! The paint is missing, it has pot holes, ruts, and a massive quantity of diverse transportation modes. Bicycles, trains, buses, pedestrians, motorbikes, cars, trucks, vans, and semi's. Fucking scary!!! And that's from my apartment. Screw crossing, at any time, on foot. The bicycles will cream you. Seriously, there will be a fatality in this way. A cyclist barreling down the hill, will strike a pedestrian. And they will die. An elderly homeless man? A five year old autistic girl? A pregnant fire fighter? Which will needlessly die. It will happen!

And worse, it could be prevented! It could be you or I or a loved one who gets killed, needlessly. All for someones entertainment. Or need.

Take the bus. No, that is probably more dangerous for everyone involved.

I'm an ex bus driver. I have the qualifications. The local bus drivers here? Are fucking dangerous. In fact, they have already injured and killed many. What's worse, I've seen them do it. I've seen the behaviors of these people. Truthfully, I'd rather have it all automated. These humans can't be trusted physically or mentally to safely transport human life.

I've seen train drivers purposely hit cars. To make a point. I've seen bus "operators" smack up a row of cars during a turn. Not even the slightest hint of care. Or just maybe enough to worry about losing his cushy paycheck.

So? What have we learned here? That bicycles, trains, and buses should only be allowed offroad...
