Originally from Portland, Oregon, I first became enamored with the performance arts in junior high school. My friends and I took our martial arts lessons to the next level by trying to "eliminate" each other while running around in our suburban back woods. Of course, we would wear Ninja or Commando outfits while out on "patrol".
High school was filled with academic disinterest, suspensions, and sports. After high school, I attended Linn Benton Community College and worked in their theater program. I made numerous friends and had a fantastically grand time. I worked all sorts of jobs in the theater from property manager, house manager, to assistant stage manager. I subsequently transferred to Southern Oregon University's nationally renowned theater program. SOU turned into a great opportunity to learn snowboarding, mountain biking, and motorcycling. Although I had a brief stint as a professional theater man in town, I flunked out of school and left town in a hurry.
This led me back to my parents place in Portland where I tried my hand at all sorts of jobs like bar tending, construction, and pizza making.
In 1995 I moved to Vancouver B.C. and immediately pried myself into the growing film industry. I started with non-union commercials and low budget films and moved my way into Union work. I worked as a Production Assistant, Assistant Locations Manager, and as a Locations Scout. Some of the productions I worked on where: X-Files, Stargate SG-1, Outer Limits, Mr. Magoo, Millennium, Viper, and various others. I even tried my hand at being an extra. This turned out to be outrageously fun and a great way to meet other people in the industry. As well as see how silly I looked on the small and big screens.
I ended up getting a divorce, being homeless, and still working as much as possible in Vancouver. I took acting classes at a local community center and looked into acting school. However, I was homesick and having a difficult time making ends meet in such a high priced city.
So, I moved back to Portland. I knew I didn't want to live in the city I grew up in, so my first duty was to find a job out of town. I found one selling tours in the Grand Canyon. This was a summer seasonal job that turned out to be the best work experience ever! I spent my off time drinking and hiking. The drinking led to debauchery while the hiking led to some friends and I hiking from the North Rim to the South Rim in twelve and a half hours! Originally, we planned on taking at least 2 days! At the end of the hike, I thought I was going to die. But, thanks to some beer and friends, I'm still here to tell the story.
I first ventured into photography in the early nineties. However, it was not until living in the Grand Canyon in 1998 that I started to take things very seriously. This renewed obsession, and the love for ski movies like Aspen Extreme, Ski School, and the Warren Miller films led me to my first job at a ski resort. I worked as a Snow Maker and Lift Operator in Sun Valley, Idaho. I cannot even begin to tell people how fun snowboarding 100+ days a season is. Not to mention all the parties, just like in the movies.
And then I moved to Yellowstone National Park and worked at the front desk of the Lake Hotel. I found out firsthand what it's like to accidentally wake the resident Buffalo by bumping into him on the trail to work. Thankfully, he was sleepy.
Following Yellowstone I tried another ski resort by the name of Steamboat Springs in Colorado. I started work at one of the resorts ski shops until I found work driving a transit bus. I learned how to drive a city bus in the ice, snow, and mountainous terrain of a ski resort. My time was filled with great workmates and fun beyond all belief.
I left Steamboat for a job driving Motor Coaches in Denali, Alaska. This was one of the best photo opportunities I have ever experienced. I personally drove from Portland to the top of Alaska in Prudhoe Bay. And had a great time doing it! Although, I don't suggest car camping in -20 degree weather.
After Alaska I lived in Portland for a little while searching for odd jobs and waiting for the next opportunity. After a while I got the realization that I did not want to live in Portland and so I headed off to Big Sky, Montana for a job at the front desk. I cross trained to be a concierge, but ultimately took the job of Employee Housing Manager. You see, the resorts have employee housing because the resorts are so remote. Let me tell you, there are stories galore about all the places I have lived, but Big Sky has some of the wildest!
I ended up moving to Sao Paulo, Brazil. I even taught English for a bit. Unfortunately, Brazil wasn't such a good fit for me. The language barrier made things rather ruff.
Back to Portland! I decided to take a break from resort jobs and accidentally started attending Portland Community College once again. My favorite studies were in photography and acting. I quickly earned my Associate of Arts Degree with honors. This led me to Portland State University. Although I spent a considerable amount of time studying film, videography, and working in the theater arts program, I ultimately decided on obtaining a degree in Psychology. In June of 2006, the school I vowed never to attend, awarded me a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology. After school I worked driving town cars, driving long haul freight, and various other random jobs.
Today, I am working as a freelance writer and photographer. I am currently working on several travel books, screenplays, and a semi-autobiographical novel. |
